Whitehorse United Church sanctuary- potential community use research

The visioning committee of our church is looking for one or two professionals to conduct in depth interviews with:

  • Selected representatives of the Whitehorse arts community – with a focus on music, theatre and performing arts groups, and
  • Selected representatives of non-governmental organizations and government departments (both YTG and the city of Whitehorse),

to determine their interests in a potentially repurposed sanctuary with an enlarged stage area, better lighting and acoustics. We are also considering replacing at least some of our pews with chairs so that the main floor space of our sanctuary is more flexible and could be used as a rehearsal, meeting or workshop space.

The ultimate goal of these two parts of this research would be to assist our congregation in making decisions regarding our sanctuary by providing clear written assessments of the interests of the local arts community, and the government/NGO organizations in using our beautiful sanctuary. We are hoping to determine if we can balance our concern for a sacred space to worship with the need for this space by the broader community in our central location in Whitehorse. The congregation has not made any decisions yet, although we have been keeping the congregation informed about the work of our visioning committee.

This work could involve visits to (and possibly photographs of the sanctuary), determining the list of organizations to contact in close consultation with the project supervisors, and then working independently once the project is clearly defined. The chair of the visioning committee, assisted by one or two members of our committee, will supervise this contract. It is possible that we may wish to monitor the research by listening to interviews that take place in the church sanctuary.

Please submit a resume and a cover letter outlining your relevant experience and interest in this project by 9 am, Friday January 14, 2022 to:

Richard T. Price, chair of the visioning committee, Whitehorse United Church, (richardtprice@shaw.ca)

We anticipate a contract for $5000 (including GST) for the consultation with the arts community, and a second contract also for $5000 (including GST)- for consultation with government departments and non-governmental organizations. Please indicate in your cover letter if you wish to apply for both components or just for one part of this research. Thus far, our funding request to our church has been approved for part one above, and in terms of the second component, our application with the YTG Community Development Fund is pending. We expect the work for these contracts to be done in the February to April, 2022 time frame (subject to further discussion with the successful applicant or applicants).
