As the Traffic Signals Project Engineer, you will report to the Senior Engineer and be responsible for the review, analysis, engineering and oversight of construction of the City’s traffic signal system. Utilizing strong problem-solving and communication skills, you will identify and resolve Traffic Signal operations issues, as well as manage Traffic Signal specifications, design and installation.

Some key responsibilities are:

  • Plan and oversee aspects of projects in order to meet project goals on time and within budget using accepted engineering principles, practices, and design standards
  • Create scopes of work and operational specifications professional work products associated with individual projects
  • Develop, prepare, review and authenticate engineering designs for traffic signals
  • Review traffic engineering studies and design plans for roadway projects relative to the traffic signal systems
  • Design traffic signal timings to ensure the traffic signal system is operating safely and efficiently
  • Develop and identify traffic operational improvements by conducting traffic engineering analysis of the transportation system
  • Determine methods to improve movement for all modes of transportation and complete assessments to improve safety at signalized intersections
  • Conduct field surveys and assessments to determine functional requirements for new signals and signal upgrades (e.g. traffic count)
  • Review, prepare and provide comprehensive responses to inquiries received from the public, stakeholders, members of Council and the other City departments
  • Project budgeting, cost and documentation management (conceptual budgets, estimate review, change order, invoice review and project close out)
  • Assist with procurement and contract management
  • Other related duties as required
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent from a recognized university preferably with coursework in transportation planning, traffic operations, and transit and traffic engineering
  • Membership with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing
  • Coursework/training in project management (PMP); or other leadership training and asset
  • Minimum 4 years progressively responsible experience in municipal or related project engineering
  • Strong project coordination skills including an understanding of project management methods and techniques
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience or familiarity with transportation related software applications is an asset
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or operator’s licensing equivalent. Applicant may be required to obtain business use auto insurance
