Senior Fuel Handling Engineer

Your role within the team

  • Perform conceptual and detail design engineering work on fuelling handling mechanical equipment and systems, including process related design on D2O, oil hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Coordinating large scale projects of considerable technical and commercial complexity.
  • Perform project lead responsibilities by directing a team comprising of professional and technical staff on a variety of tasks in design, development, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, testing and commissioning.
  • Prepare design documentation such as design requirements, design descriptions, design specifications, technical specifications, component specifications, test procedures and plans, commissioning procedures, registration design submissions packages, flow sheets, detail drawings, general arrangements and equipment layouts.
  • Perform component sizing, flow network analysis and stress analysis of mechanical systems.
  • Review design reports, analysis reports, calculations, documents and drawings in support of design verification.
  • Perform complex technical calculations relevant to design such as heat load analysis, fluid mechanics, and calculations related to component integrity.
  • Define project work scope, monitoring and reporting project progress and communicating with clients.
  • Interface with other engineers’ disciplines to obtain data and resolve issues relevant to design.
  • Conduct technical, conceptual and detail design meetings in front of peers, clients and suppliers.
  • Perform pre- and post-order engineering support including review of client requirements, review of applicable documents and drawings, review of codes and standards, perform cost estimating, proposal preparation, preparing and review of engineering quotation requests, technical evaluations and resolving design deviations.
  • Provide technical guidance to drafting staff as well as mentoring and oversight of junior engineers.
  • Conduct site visits at various nuclear generating stations and suppliers.
  • Provide engineering support to quality surveillance, manufacturing, assembly and testing with non-conformances.
  • Work in accordance with applicable codes, standards, regulations, client and company procedures.
  • Provide consultation and/or review and approval of engineering quotation request packages and purchase requisitions.
  • Assist other senior engineers and branch manager with daily engineering activities.

The ideal candidate:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited University with a minimum 10 years of experience in machine, automation, equipment and/or tooling design, or 10 years of experience in the fluid power, oil hydraulic control and/or water process control industry.
  • Registered, or eligible to be registered, as Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
  • Solid understanding of mechanics of machine, mechanics of materials, material selection and fundamentals of machine component design.
  • Solid understanding of fluid mechanics and process system control design including open and closed loop oil hydraulic circuit design.
  • Knowledge of pressure boundary work including pressure vessel design, analysis, code classification, code class boundary, non-destructive examination and design registration is an asset.
  • Knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section II, III, V, VIII and IX is an asset.
  • Knowledge of general requirements for pressure-retaining systems and components in CANDU nuclear power plants CSA N285.0 code is an asset.
  • Knowledge of boiler, pressure vessel, and pressure piping CSA B51 code is an asset.
  • Knowledge of dimensioning and tolerancing ASME Y14.5 standard is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Presentation skills and public speaking abilities is an asset.
  • Knowledge of seismic and environmental qualification methods and process is an asset.
  • CAD experience in Solid Edge or Solid Works is an asset.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a dynamic team-oriented environment.
  • Must be capable of working effectively in stressful environment and of maintaining a good working relationship with peers.
  • Must be capable to work under tight deadlines, on emergency situations and flexibility to travel when needed.
