This is skilled supervisory and operational work in painting high traffic volume crosswalks, or in applying road lines using a roadmarking machine. An employee of this class lays out new markings according to drawings or written instructions; mixes and prepares paints and fills paint tanks; cleans paint lines, guns, heaters, and tanks periodically. Makes running repairs and carries out minor maintenance on the roadmarking machine or the thermoplastic paint roadliners and heater equipment; completes daily worksheet to report work performed. Supervises workers engaged in marking the site and operating the roadmarking machine and workers engaged in applying thermoplastic paint and other related tasks in high traffic volume crosswalks. May operate a variety of City vehicles used in transporting equipment, parts, materials, supplies, tools and employees to job sites; loads and unloads material, supplies and equipment and maintains vehicle. Performs related work as required.


Qualifications include Grade 12, plus considerable experience in the use of hand-operated lining devices, spray painting equipment and paint mixtures as a Markings & Signs Worker I; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and practices employed in painting various types of pavement marking; of departmental standards governing the type and location of lane lining, other road markings and signs; of the operating techniques of the roadmarking paint equipment. Ability to read and interpret drawings indicating the details of roadmarking lay-outs, and to lay out new marking accordingly; to recognize hazards involved in working amidst traffic and to take the necessary precautionary measures; to operate a road marker machine safely and effectively and to perform servicing and maintenance tasks. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, shiftwork and to be placed on an on call rotation as required. A Class 3 Driver’s license with Air Brake Endorsement (operation of roadmarking machine) is required.
