We strive to create an environment where individuals feel a connection to their role, each other and our community.OverviewWe are seeking a Junior Accountant to join our Finance team, to support the continued growth of Semaphore in the Finance and Accounting space. In this role, the Junior Accountant will gain exposure to the complex accounting that arises in a small, private business within the Health Sciences domain. We are seeking someone for this role that is driven by the detail oriented nature of finance work and looking to join a close, communicative team environment.About The OpportunityReporting directly to the Head of Finance, you will play a key role in the Finance team to ensure the quality and timeliness of our accounting processes continue as we go through an exciting time of growth. In this role, you are motivated to build upon your accounting skills and apply them across a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to; month end close, reconciliations, weekly reporting, transaction support and GST reporting, as well as AR and project support. Because we work in a complex domain, it is important you are comfortable asking questions or escalating concerns; capturing detailed documentation and personal notes along the way.Your ability to work independently will be an important part of the role, in addition to understanding how to identify variances and troubleshooting issues to drive solutions. Day to day, you can expect to work on a mix of structured, planned tasks and ad-hoc work that may arise, along with participating in team or individual projects. It’s important to note that your teammates have a variety of experience and expertise that you can lean on and collaborate with as you approach your work. A unique aspect of this role is the complex accounting that you will gain exposure to, in addition to the opportunity to develop technical skills such as javascript that enable our automation processes. You will also be working within a smaller team, so when ready you will have the opportunity to participate in things that may otherwise be parsed out into higher-level accounting roles with the support of your team members.Must Haves
  • Solid understanding of Accounting processes and principles gained in an educational setting - individuals graduating up to December 2022 will be considered
  • Experience in a professional accounting or financial setting such as a co-op opportunity or post degree placement
  • Experience with Quickbooks or other accounting softwareProficiency in Excel and Google Sheets Solid organization and time management skills
  • Attention to detail, specifically ability to identify and communicate errors and variancesAbility to leverage clear and concise communication when interacting with stakeholders
  • Ability to capture accurate documentation of process
  • Interest in pursuing CPA or a career in accounting
  • A strong understanding of internal cost allocations and the impact on the accounting workflow
What to expect, Within One Month
  • Observe a full accounting cycle, taking notes and learning processes and policies along the way
  • You’ll become familiar with our collaboration tools (Slack, Jira, GSuite, and Confluence) and have engaged with our culture and channels
  • Participate in the team’s sprint planning process, learning about how the team approaches task prioritization and project planning
  • You’ll experience a company stand up and enjoy (a virtual) lunch with the team
Within Two Months
  • Familiarize yourself with weekly reporting
  • Begin working with the month end workbooks
  • Identify and document key cost accounts and their impact on financial statements
  • Complete weekly transactional reviews to support accurate cost allocation and monthly GST reporting
Within Six Months
  • Able to complete Month end workbooks independently
  • Able to complete weekly reporting independently
  • Able to complete monthly GST reporting independently
  • Gained a good understanding of current projects and all project types
  • You’ll have established connections with client purchasing and AP departments
